Cohen’s creative creatures are something to see….but to fish with them is even better.
Pat live in upstate New York where there is an abundance of warm water streams, lakes, and farm ponds to fish; although most anything with gills is fair game up there. In his early years Pat was far from the best fisherman with spin and casting gear, he admits. However, he began tossing flies in 2008 and since then he caught more fish than one can count. Then in January of 2009 he simply started tying flies.
In a recent conversation with Kelly Galloup he referred to Pat as "a freak of nature" simply because of the limited time he has been tying. Coming from Kelly himself, that is a huge compliment and one statement I will never forget. But knowing Pat and his overly creative background, it was expected.
Pat Cohen's Creative Creatures
All of my flies are meant to be fished -- no matter how much people tell me they look like patterns to display. I enjoy the blending of natural with synthetic materials to create flies that maximize the triggers the predators appetite...and they eat with aggression. I blend my knowledge and deep passion for art with my fly tying drive and determination to create very unique approaches to fly making. I have been accused of being a lure maker from time to time…but honestly I find no offense in that at all, as all flies do lure the fish in if they are well-designed and properly presented.
My passion for all things fly began with Bass, both Smallmouth and Largemouth. I am to this day still passionate about these wonderful fish, and my guess is the passion will always remain. If it wasn't for these fish I wouldn't be in this industry and so far I have designed numerous flies around the pursuit of them. I also have an obsession with the custom tackle industry and figuring out new ways to build technology into bass flies through materials, design and unique performance. One of my latest creations for doing just that is the Cohen’s Creature Ultra Suede series. This cool creature was a perfect way for me to bring the movement and success of soft plastics into fly tying.
What other species does Pat like to chase?
I have a deeply ingrained passion for chasing golden bones; carp on the fly is a challenge that more and more fly anglers are only beginning to appreciate. Carp are by far one of the most difficult fresh water species to hook with a fly, and I've created a wide variety of nymph patterns to target these misunderstood and often maligned game fish. I created a very unique dubbing called Cohen’s Carp Dub to help create more convincing carp flies.
I also have a major obsession with Pike on the fly as well. I have designed a selection of streamers and materials to aid in the pursuit of the water wolf. The power and explosion of these incredible game fish is second to none. There is nothing in the world like hooking a big pike on a glass rod in small stream hand to hand combat style.
